ReSound Hearing Aids
The First With Made For iPhone Hearing Aids
Made For iPhone Hearing Aids
Resound are another Danish hearing aid manufacturer with a long history. They are one of the top 5 manufacturers in the world and are renowned for innovation and constantly advancing technology. Since they began in the 1940’s, Resound has continued to grow but it is in the last 20 years their innovation has pushed them to new heights. The introduction of the outstanding new LiNX Quattro range in 2018 really excited many in the profession. In 2019, they have plans to introduce both Artificial Intelligence and Siri integration to both the Quattro and 3D ranges of hearing aids as an upgrade option.
They were the first hearing device manufacturer to offer open fit hearing aids, an advance in technology that was at the time groundbreaking. They are also the creators of WDRC (Wide Dynamic Range Compression) which improved sound processing and DFS (Digital Feedback Suppression) which was designed to eliminate feedback. Their most recent innovation has and will make a difference to how hearing aids are perceived across the world. The introduced the very first Made For iPhone hearing aids which were received well both within the profession and for the first time garnered notice from the general technology world.
ReSound is renowned for pioneering innovative solutions for both adults and children who suffer from hearing loss. In the recent past, they have moved far beyond just hearing aids and now include excellent wireless accessory systems. ReSound have become to be viewed as one of the premium hearing aid manufacturers, delivering strong innovation and design. With their introduction of the LiNX™, the first-ever Made For iPhone hearing aids, they again displayed their groundbreaking innovation.
They had been quiet for a long time after the introduction of the LiNX2 but they finally updated their platform releasing the LiNX 3D. It appears the wait was worth it though. The 3D platform is very good and of course, has some real groundbreaking features. They didn't hang around though, in late 2018 they introduced the new LiNX Quattro range which is a huge step forward for them. I like Resound hearing aids a lot, they have had problems and they have overcome them but they have always been a decent hearing aid with a lovely sound.

ReSound Omnia
ReSound has delivered a new hearing aid platform that's available right now in Scotland. The new Omnia range of hearing devices offers ReSound's latest technology to help you hear better. Packed with both updated and new features, the devices allow you to hear better when attending those complex sound environments like family dinners or celebrations with their best speech understanding in noise yet
Three Styles of RICs Initially
The platform was first introduced in three RIC styles, a rechargeable RIC that will offer an unbelievable 30 hours of use, a RIC 61 with a traditional size 312 battery, and a RIC 62 with a traditional size 13 battery. The devices, as you can see from the main picture are shaped just like their previous One platform offering.
Resound has announced the expansion of the Omnia range with a brand new Mini RIC rechargeable, two BTEs and a choice of custom ITE devices:
- NEW miniRIE – These miniature receiver-in-ear hearing aids are ReSound’s smallest rechargeable style with a gently curved shape that rests low on the ear for a more discreet fit without compromising on sound or comfort. Like all the other RICs it can be matched to your hair or complexion to maximise discreetness.
- Custom Rechargeable – These hearing aids are designed to look like modern earbuds and offer a custom, comfortable fit, high-quality sound, and rechargeable batteries.
- Completely-in-Canal (CIC) – These simple custom-designed hearing aids are so small it’s unlikely anyone will realize users are wearing them, and as they sit inside the ear canal, they’re protected from wind noise.
- Behind-the-Ear (BTE) – These user-friendly hearing aids are small, powerful, rechargeable, and can be matched to your hair and complexion to maximise discreetness.
All except the CIC will connect to ReSound’s Smart3D App and feature Bluetooth streaming of audio and phone calls, with hands-free calling for Apple iOS devices. Each is available in three technology levels (9, 7, and 5).
ReSound is making strong claims with the Omnia release, they say that you can hear your best in noise with an incredible 150% improvement in speech understanding. The supporting study evidence on that 150% number shows that Omnia will provide 4.3dB SNR (Signal To Noise Ratio) improvement to speech understanding compared to their legacy products. While 4.3dB sounds like a small number, for SNR, it's a technically significant improvement.
ReSound also mentions Organic Hearing, which means that they sound natural, feel natural and connect you to your world naturally. It seems that ReSound hearing aids have become more natural sounding with every new release if my customers are to be believed, so it will be interesting to see what some of them make of the Omnia. They also announced an interesting new feature that will be available on the App that they call Check My Fit.
This feature will allow you to check the physical fit of your hearing aids, it's a pretty good idea because many new users are never sure if they have their hearing aids in their ears correctly. Having your aids properly in your ears is important, if they aren't in properly, you don't get the full benefit. Check My Fit should solve the uncertainty.
Two more things offered are natural own voice perception and 360-degree sound environment mapping. For new users especially, the suddenly changed perception of their voice when wearing hearing aids can be irksome at first but usually fades. The new system will work towards making it a much more natural perception. ReSound say that 360-degree mapping enables users to automatically tune into what they want to listen to and not have the hearing aids choose for them.
Custom By ReSound
ReSound finally delivered custom hearing aids on the One platform, however, we can forgive them for the delay, because they spent the time delivering their first-ever custom rechargeable hearing aids. ReSound offers some of the most outstanding rechargeable aids available. They offer excellent battery life in nice discreet packages. The new Custom By ReSound rechargeables are no exception offering 24 hours of use even when streaming all day. The range is made up of two types, the CIC (Completely In Canal), and the rechargeable device which can be built in ITC (In The Canal), half-shell and full-shell
Unlike some of the instant-fit rechargeable devices available from other manufacturers, these are true custom devices, which means that we need to take an impression of your ears and send it away. They then manufacture the devices to fit the unique shape of your ears. With the custom rechargeable though, they don't just stop there, the charger is manufactured as a perfect copy of your ear canals to ensure the devices sit in it exactly. Meaning that they will be charged every time.
With the exception of the CIC, these are dual microphone devices, and they all run on the One platform. They offer them at three distinct technology levels like other ReSound model types. They haven't quite integrated them into the One range keeping them separate, but the technology that powers One will power them.
ReSound says that Custom made by ReSound delivers three innovations:
- An industry first, Custom's charger contains two specially created inserts that match the shape of each hearing aid for seamless, reliable charging. The aids will offer up to 24 hours of use time on a single charge–even when streaming–for all-day use.
- A reimagined push button that is accessible over a much more significant portion of the faceplate.
- Custom delivers a 30% improvement in speech understanding in noise and 1-2 dB more directional benefit compared to the company's previous custom product, ReSound LiNX Quattro.
That Charger
The new custom insert in the recharger is a brilliant idea. The insert mirrors the hearing aid shell's shape. It means good electrical contact between the aid and recharger ensuring they charge properly every time. It also makes it much easier for you to slip the hearing aids into place which makes it easy to use for anyone with dexterity issues.
Choice of Colours
Custom made by ReSound will come in a choice of colours and will be available in a new In-style™ anthracite colour, or Blend-in™ hair and skin tones.
The devices will come in ITC, half-shell or full-shell, there is a new CIC (Completely In Canal) as well, but it isn't a rechargeable device. Too small to get a rechargeable battery into. It will be interesting to see how popular this device is with my customers. While they will be great hearing aids, the style will not be suitable for everyone.
Having said that, many people would like the idea that everyone thought they were wearing wireless earbuds rather than hearing aids. ReSound One
ReSound announced the introduction of their new ReSound One hearing aid platform on August 18th but they officially launched them at a virtual global event on September 1st. As I said in my news article, there is a lot of new with this platform, new features, a new chip, a new normalised sound and a breakthrough microphone placement.
A Microphone in The Receiver
One of the big innovations is the new microphone placement with their M&RIE receiver. ReSound believe that with a third microphone in the ear canal that they can make use of the more natural sound cues that can be picked up there. The outer ear plays a big part in our ability to localise sound allowing us to work out where sound comes from. This plays a big part in our ability to ignore sound that we are not interested in and to focus on the sound we are.
Resound Say "The outer ear (pinna) is designed by nature to work like an acoustic antenna. It helps the brain localize and tune in to a particular sound, for example when listening to a specific voice in a crowded café. However, the most popular styles of hearing aids (Receiver-In-Ear and Behind-The-Ear models) capture sound from microphones that sit behind the ear and then approximate the effect of the pinna. The result is an averaged and incomplete reproduction of sound, making it hard for the brain to achieve its natural localization and noise-cancelling function."
ReSound say that they have worked on this for over ten years. Placing a microphone in the receiver is challenging because of the possibility of it causing feedback. ReSound has introduced a brand new feedback management system which they are calling DFS Ultra III. They have worked on this system for nearly ten years and say that the new feedback manager combined with the newly designed receivers allows them to deal with the feedback challenge.
New Directionality Modes
ReSound has also introduced two new directionality modes they are calling All Access Directionality and a user-activated Ultra focus setting. All access directionality allows you to focus on the speaker while still having access to the surrounding sound. Ultra Focus will be user-activated and it allows you to narrow the focus of the microphones in noisy situations. It will allow you to focus on the person in front of you allowing you to hear what they are saying even in a noisy sound situation. These new directionality modes will only be available in the top level of technology.
Made For iPhone, Made For Android
The ReSound ONE platform will offer connectivity options to both iOS and AndroidTM smartphones for streaming and hearing aid control.
The Hearing Aids
The new One platform will be introduced with three RIC (Receiver In Canal) or as they call them Receiver In Ear devices. They will be a rechargeable aid using lithium-ion, a 312 traditional battery aid and a size 13 traditional battery aid. They have introduced a new style of casing which while similar to their old one looks a bit more angular. The rechargeable will come with the outstanding charger case that they introduced with the Quattro, which means charges on the go if you need it.
Three Technology Levels
The ReSound One platform will be available in three technology platforms, the 9, the 7 and the 5 offering a ReSound One for every pocket.

LiNX Quattro
As we reported on our blog (13/08/2014), Resound has announced the launch of a new premium plus hearing aid called the LiNX Quattro. Resound has announced the launch of a new premium plus hearing aids called the LiNX Quattro. The Quattro works on a completely new chipset from Resound that delivers a huge improvement in processing power and speed. Resound has used that chipset to full effect by completely re-designing their signal processing and the hearing aid features. While the initially introduced just Receiver In Canal hearing aids, they have now released custom hearing aids on the Quattro platform.
LiNX Quattro Prices
We would expect the range to be sold at prices from £1200.00 to £2200.00 in the UK depending on the Practice and location. We would expect the range to be sold at prices from €1400.00 to €3000.00 in Ireland. We would expect the range to be sold at prices from $1400.00 to $3200.00 in the USA. Just to be clear, we don't set prices here and they differ from Practice to Practice across the World so our expectations aren't binding, they are just a guess and some research. Always remember, we all like to shop around, but always be clear about what is being delivered. You will need care and support, make sure you will get it. You will also need your hearing aid validated or verified to get the best experience, paying a little more to ensure your experience is good, is not wasted money. That's our price rant for the day over, let's talk about the devices.
A quick run-down of the salient points:
- The Quattro range is available in three technology levels
- Quattro devices are now both Receiver In Canal devices, Behind The Ear and In The Ear Devices
- All of the Quattro devices are Bluetooth direct connection hearing aids
- The devices use a brand new chip platform
- The chip has 100% faster processing than 3D
- The chip has 100% additional memory over the 3D
- Resound are using a new way of handling directionality inputs
- They have introduced a redesigned wireless radio with extra signal strength
- They have extended the bandwidth of the devices giving extra high-frequencies
- They have increased their dynamic input range, calling it industry leading
- The Quattro range has an outstanding Lithium-ion rechargeable device available
- The rechargeable hearing device will deliver 24 hours of use with 50% streaming on a three-hour charge
- The Lithium-ion devices will deliver 30 hours of use without streaming on a three-hour charge
- The Quattro range offers the first ever Bluetooth direct connection Completely In Canal hearing aid ever
A Lithium-ion Rechargeable Made For iPhone Hearing Aid
The LiNX Quattro LT-61 is a rechargeable direct connection, Bluetooth enabled or Made For iPhone hearing aid just like all the LiNX devices before it. Resound have redesigned the wireless radio though and they say that it is more powerful than ever before. That should translate into pretty stable connection to the iPhone and hopefully Android phones when Android releases the new version. Making it a rechargeable device makes a lot of sense, although they have used the chip upgrades to improve power consumption, a rechargeable option allows you the comfort of never having to worry about hearing aid batteries. The battery life is also fantastic, they say that you will get 24 hours of life even if you are streaming for 50% of the time, that's pretty amazing. The device shown above is the rechargeable option, but they are also offering a traditional hearing aid battery model which is based on the LT-62 using a size thirteen battery.
Traditional Zinc Air Powered
The LT-62 is a traditional zinc-air powered device that takes a size 13 battery. It has a telecoil onboard and offers a multi-functional button which acts as volume control and programme button. The device is water-resistant. This might be the device for you if you want an on-board telecoil receiver.
Resound say that the new power management system will increase the battery life of the 62 type device by 20%. We reckon that most modern 13 battery hearing aids will offer you about 5 to 7 days of use. You will be lucky to get much more than that.
The new Mini RIE 61 is a very discreet device powered by a 312 battery. It doesn't have a telecoil but it does offer the multi-functional button which acts as volume control and programme button.
Behind The Ear Hearing Aids
Resound have also introduced three BTE hearing aids to the Quattro range the BTE 67, the BTE 77 and the BTE 88.
BTE 67: This is a wireless Made for iPhone BTE that can be used with a thin-tube or standard BTE tubing and mould. This device has a push-button, volume control and telecoil. It uses a size 13 battery.
BTE 77: This is a wireless Made for iPhone BTE that can be used with a thin-tube or standard BTE tubing and mould. This device has a push-button, volume control and telecoil. It also offers Direct Audio Input, which means it will accept an audio boot. It uses a size 13 battery.
BTE 88: This is a wireless high-power Made for iPhone BTE. The device is fitted with a push-button, volume control and telecoil. It also offers Direct Audio Input, which means it will accept an audio boot. It uses a size 13 battery.
Custom Hearing Aids
Resound have introduced four custom hearing aid models on the Quattro range. Each of the custom devices are Bluetooth hearing aids and there are some fantastic options available with them.
CIC W Completely in Canal: This is the first-ever Bluetooth enabled CIC, although, in my experience, it has been more an ITC size. It will connect to both iPhones and enabled Android phones for streaming of audio and phone calls. It won't offer a telecoil.
ITC DW In The Canal: This is a slightly larger wireless Made for iPhone in-the-canal hearing aid. It uses a size 312 battery and can come with an optional telecoil and programme button.
ITE DW In The Ear: This is a larger full shell wireless Made for iPhone in-the-ear hearing with an optional telecoil and programme button. It uses a size 312 or 13 battery.
MIH W Microphone in Helix: Resound is the only manufacturers who offer this style of hearing aid, it is a non-wireless small microphone-in-helix hearing device. The microphone is attached to a wire that you place in the helix of your ear. It uses a size 312 or 13 battery and offers an optional telecoil and programme button.
It will be interesting to see how the custom hearing aids work out. While normally with new technology we would expect teething problems, ReSound have been offering Made For iPhone custom hearing aids for a long time. It will be interesting to see just how small the CIC is and what type of battery life that they can get out of it.

Premium Plus Price Point
Resound have not introduced the devices as a replacement for the LiNX 3D, rather, they have introduced them as a new premium price point above the LiNX 3D 9 and 7 and 5. With the expansion of the Quattro range to now include custom hearing aids, they will be more attractive to more people. The fact that this is the first-ever Made For iPhone and Made For Android CIC is also to be celebrated.

A Solution For Severe To Profound Hearing Loss From Resound
Resound Enzo 3D Hearing Aids
Resound have just launched their latest hearing device for people with severe to profound hearing loss. They have updated Enzo Made For iPhone (MFI) hearing aids with their new 3D platform which brings all of the benefits of that new system to this market. Those benefits include better spatial awareness and much better speech understanding in noise. With Made for iPhone® technology, you can stream phone calls, music and more from your iPhone, iPad® or iPod touch® directly to your hearing aids. If you have an Android or any Bluetooth-enabled phone, you can still stream calls, music and more with a discreet ReSound Phone Clip+ wireless accessory.
Vibrant and crystal clear sound
Like the LiNX 3D range from ReSound, Enzo 3D hearing aids come with the superior sound quality of Surround Sound by ReSound. They work together, continuously exchanging data about your sound environment for optimized performance. The hearing aids are available in three levels of technology, the top of the range 9, the 7 and the 5.
Enzo 3D Prices
Two Models, Huge Power
There are two hearing aid models in the range both of which are Behind The Ear hearing aids and both of which are extremely powerful. The BTE 88 is the smaller of the two and takes a size 13 battery. The BTE 98 is larger but takes the 675 battery that many people with this hearing loss are used to.
The 98 is also more powerful than the 88, although not by much. However, Resound say that the 98 will get twelve days of use on the 675 battery, that's fantastic battery life for a smart hearing aid.
Resound Assist is the really big news for both Providers and Users. Resound Assist will allow your provider to adjust your hearing aids remotely. That means if you want adjustments on the go, they can be provided without you having to attend the clinic. The system is really easy to use and is quite intuitive. This might not be for everyone, but this feature will be a godsend for the people who love it. It will allow them complete freedom over their experience, over their customer experience.

The App, Resound Smart 3D
The accompanying app also allows you personalise your hearing experience in a deeper way. It has been re-designed to be more intuitive and easier to use and it offers real control. When more clarity is needed, patients can increase speech focus, reduce noise and even reduce wind noise. Again, this might not be for everyone, but for those who want it, it will enrich their experience. This has to be seen as an excellent thing.
